What Are Roman Blinds?
Roman blinds, sometimes called Roman shades or fabric shades, are a very popular type of modern window treatment that accentuates simplicity and a minimalistic approach to interior design. Roman blinds get their name from a style of awning that was used in the first century AD at the Roman Colosseum. As spectators grew weary of the hot Italian sun, a simple two-pole and fabric covering would be lowered over the crowd to provide them with shade. The same simple design is used today with roman blinds. They consist of a flat, or sometimes pleated fabric which is drawn up to fold underneath itself creating a cascading effect as it is raised. As many people pursue modern window treatments, roman blinds offer the aesthetically pleasing style that creates a warm, inviting home.
Fabric Roman Blinds
The most common roman blinds are made with fabric of varying quality which is mounted inside the window frame creating a simple transition between wall and window covering. Fabric roman blinds have the advantage of being available in a wide variety of styles, fabrics, colors, and patterns, all while maintaining a relatively low price. Some fabric shades take the minimalistic approach one step further and remove all drawing mechanisms in favor of a simple fabric tie system. Most fabric roman blinds can generally be assigned to one of three styles.
- Flat Roman Shades – Flat roman shades or blinds are one of the best selling modern window treatments today. Many contemporary interior designs call for a minimal one dimensional space. Flat roman blinds or even roll up shades work well in any modern environment.
- Relaxed Roman Blinds – Most common in coastal interior design, relaxed roman blinds are made of sheer, translucent fabrics like linen, cotton, or even burlap. They block all direct sunlight, but graciously allow the sea breeze and natural sunlight into the room.
- Pleated Roman Blinds – Pleated roman blinds are an excellent example of between modern window treatments. The pleated fabric creates a cascading effect, similar to a waterfall as the fabric is drawn upon itself.

Bamboo Roman Blinds
Bamboo roman blinds or bamboo shades operate in a similar fashion to fabric roman blinds with the exception that they are made of bamboo slats. Creating a natural look in any environment, bamboo shades are great for urban, tropical, and chic interior designs. The simplicity remains the same, as bamboo roman blinds draw underneath themselves creating a folded look when completely drawn. Bamboo shades are the wonderful combination of beauty, durability, and function. Additionally, as bamboo is considered a renewable resource, these roman blinds make a great “green” alternative to other window treatments.
