The Challenge Of Door Blinds

Door BlindsDoor blinds solve one of the most difficult problems when decorating your home. It is very likely you’re having trouble covering a door window, because traditional window treatments will not work. Since doors open and close so frequently and violently, regular curtains, blinds, and shades would be constantly getting in the way, potentially falling off or hurting someone. Therefore an entire style of blinds have been developed called door blinds which enclose a mini blind or similar shade behind a layer of glass in order hold it firmly in place when the door moves. However, you are not only limited to enclosed door blinds. There are several options including custom made plantation shutters, as well as top and bottom curtain rods which can give you the privacy and light blocking you want.

Enclosed Door Blinds

By far some of the most common and popular door blinds are made to be enclosed behind a layer of glass or plexi-glass. This style is beneficial because it is easy to install, safe to use, maintenance free, and does not have any cords or strings that could swing and become hazards. Many enclosed door blinds such as those made by ODL, utilize the existing window frame to attach the unit so there is no damage done to the door. Benefits of this type of installation include privacy, light control, energy conservation, no dusting or cleaning, and no cords to get in the way. The only downside is that they do make the door slightly bulkier, however there are doors available with these type of enclosed door blinds built into the door if you would like to replace the entire door.

Plantation Shutter Door Blinds

One of the highest quality window treatments available for french doors, or patio doors is having custom plantation shutters made to match the exact size of your window. Any reputable local shutter company can measure the opening and build a shutter made for the door. The result is a timeless and elegant solution that looks great whether you have interior shutters throughout the house or not. Again the disadvantage is the fact that the door become bulkier, however with custom plantation shutters you can match the color, or stain of your door to make it blend right in.

Mini Door Blinds

If you have an interior or exterior metal door, one of the quickest, easiest, and cheapest solutions are magnetic mini-blinds. Simply measure and choose the size closest to your window opening and attach just like a refrigerator magnet. No tools, drilling, or fastening required. They work great as a temporary or permanent solution. Of course, the disadvantage of this type of blind is that it can potentially swing when the door is opened and closed. But for those on a budget, it is the best solution.

French Door Curtain Panel

If you want to maintain the warmth and cozy feeling fabric provides, a dual rod french door curtain panel may be the perfect solution. Two small curtain rods are attached to the door, one at the top of the window, one at the bottom. Then a thin, sheer fabric is stretched between the two rods creating a firm, but soft panel just a fraction of an inch in front of the window. A simple tie in the center of the panel creates a bow tie look that makes a beautiful door blinds alternative.
